Art: A non-negotiable

It comes as no surprise that a writer or designer often cites a museum visit as the most effective antidote to a creative block. Exposure to art–similar to the reading of novels–presents an inexhaustible source of knowledge and inspiration which can no doubt enrich someone’s artistic craft. Having been bestowed the Officier de L'Ordre Arts et Lettres (Officer of the Order of Arts and Letters) by the French government for her contribution and commitment to cultural service, Silvia’s marriage to the arts continues to evolve and permeate her universe.

“The way I see it, there is no separation of fashion and art,” states Silvia, “some of my most memorable collection’s have been directly influenced by artistic periods, such as the Victorian period or the paintings and sculptures of artists like Louise Bourgeois and Mark Rothko. Moreover, galleries have always been one of my favorite places to showcase my creations–there is something very special and natural about my pieces and the art that is hanging on the walls, like an unexpected, yet very meaningful conversation with a stranger.”

One of these places where magical dialogue between the clothes and the art takes place is the Center for Italian Modern Art (CIMA) in New York City. “After a collection is created, our next challenge is to come up with the best venue to showcase the pieces in. Sometimes, the circumstances are almost too good to be true, for example an opportunity like Art Basel in Miami, but for others, we have to brainstorm and do our research,” noted Sofia Espinosa Tcherassi, Director of Ready-to-Wear, “the CIMA was one of those treasure finds and we could not be happier with the outcome of it all.”
