Travel Diaries: AlUla & Shebara

“I always say that a trip is enjoyed three times: in the planning, while you are there, and for the rest of your life when you are telling the stories.” It is precisely this wanderlust that gave Mariel Salazar the impetus to become a luxury travel advisor— having visited over 60 countries herself, it is a feeling she knows well. “Every trip is an opportunity to come home a little different than when you left, and that, to me, is the whole point.”

With that in mind, we asked the entrepreneur, whose eye for art and fashion infuses every aspect of her visual storytelling, about her recent trip to Saudi Arabia. Below, she shares a few anecdotes and her tips for a practical yet fashionable getaway.

On Creating Travel Experiences

“What I love most is the research. The moment I have a client's profile, whether I know them personally or they've walked me through what they love, something clicks and I enter this almost never-ending process of finding things, layering details, thinking about each person in the traveling party and what would make the trip feel tailored to them. That process is so exciting to me.”

A Desert Calling

“Saudi Arabia will be one of the top travel destinations in the world within the next ten years. Until 2019, the country was completely closed to international tourism. Today it's undergoing a transformation unlike anything I've seen, with a level of investment in luxury hospitality that is truly remarkable. AlUla is one of those places that stops you mid-breath. The region holds 200,000 years of human history and is home to Hegra, Saudi Arabia's first UNESCO World Heritage Site, an ancient city built by the same Nabataean civilization that built Petra, carved directly into the rock.”

The Well-Dressed Traveler

“Planning my outfits for a trip is one of my favorite parts of the process and I take it just as seriously as the itinerary. There is a quote I love: "There is no such thing as bad weather, just inadequate clothing." I think it applies just as much to the place you are visiting. Saudi Arabia has a deeply rich culture and a very strong identity, and I always think it is important to respect the place you are in.”

Oh! The Places You’ll Go

“If you have the privilege of traveling, use it to enrich yourself. Immerse yourself in culture and nature, be open to destinations you have never considered before, and resist the urge to always go back to the same places. The world is too vast and too generous for that.”
